Tips for ordering Family Reunion T-Shirts

Having custom t-shirts made is a great way to commemorate a family reunion.  The shirts make a great take-home gift for each family member, and it also looks great when you’re all together at a location all wearing the same shirt.  (One of my favorite emails is when I get a photo of a family all wearing their t-shirts!)  Of course, the difficult part about ordering t-shirts for your family reunion is putting the order together.  Deciding on a theme, a color, and what sizes to order can be a truly daunting task.  Before we get into some helpful tips, always remember that we are here to help.  We have done tons of t-shirts for family reunions, and we can give you feedback on any ideas you have, or possibly give you some ideas to jump-start your decisions.


Where to Start

One of the best pieces of advice we can give is to limit the number of people in the decision-making position.  By limiting the number of people making the decision, it’s much easier to finalize important details without getting feedback from 10, 20, or more people.  You can also make decisions much faster, which can be an important factor when ordering items that are for an event on a specific date.  Most of our customers have one or two people who are working together to work with the artist and customer service person and that seems to work best.  Of course, some customers with larger families will have a small committee of people to make initial decisions like budget and theme, etc, but then have one person assigned to work with us to put the order together.  The idea here is to have a fun item to remind folks of the event.  Most people will be pretty excited no matter what the actual t-shirt is.

Organization is key!  Consider setting up a new email address that is strictly for family reunion business and that way individual emails don’t get lost in pages of other personal emails.  Have one contact person for each immediate family, and make sure you have both their email address, and a contact phone number so you can reach them for questions or last minute changes.

One of the first decisions to make, once you’ve decided to do t-shirts, is the budget.  Depending on how the shirts are being purchased, that might vary.  Is one, or a few people covering the cost?  What would they like to spend overall?  Is each person paying for their own shirt?  That’s a little more typical and you can send out an email asking for people to suggest a range they’d be willing to pay for t-shirts.  Keep in mind, the cost of t-shirts is affected by the quantity ordered, the number of print colors, and print locations, so we can hit many different price points.  Let us know if you are trying to hit a certain price, and we’ll be sure to guide you through the decisions to get you as close as possible.  We love working on family reunions, so whatever you decide is best for you, we’ll work with you to make your ordering process as easy as possible.


Picking the T-Shirt

One of the more popular t-shirt styles for family reunions is the Gildan 2000 Ultra Cotton Short Sleeve T-Shirt  This shirt is perfect for most families because it comes in such a wide array of colors and sizes.  The main adult size group, sizes S-5XL is available in over 60 colors.  Almost 40 of those colors are also available in youth sizes which are typically an important part of family reunion t-shirt orders.  Gildan t-shirts are also a great value, so we’re sure to find a way to meet your budget.

Theme and Design

The next thing to consider is the theme.  Many family reunion t-shirt designs start around a central theme.  Maybe it’s based on an inspirational quote, or the location of the reunion itself.  What design elements would best suit the theme.  Some of the more popular design elements would be a tree, or the image of the state where the reunion is being held.  Other popular design elements include other environmental elements such as lakes, water, flowers etc., hearts or stars and other decorative images.  Whatever it is, you’ll find lots of clipart and text options in our online design studio.   You can choose over 100,000 pieces of clipart and lots of great fonts, add color or design elements all at the click of a button.  You can also upload your own artwork.  Of course, we’re here to help too.  Give us a call and we can assist with your design.

What color t-shirt would you like to do?  People tend to do brighter colors for family reunions.  It can make a group really stand out, and is a typical choice for summertime when most family reunions are held.  Check to make sure the color that you want is available in the sizes you’ll need and when in doubt, give us a call!  In the online design studio, you can create a design on one t-shirt color and easily click through to see that same design on other t-shirt colors.  It’s a great feature.


Putting the order together

Once you have the t-shirt color and design completed, it’s time to confirm all your sizes with your family members.  Earlier, I mentioned designating one person from each immediate family as a contact.  Have each of those people put together a size list for their family group and once you have everyone’s individual sizes, you can then add all of them up to make a master size list.  It’s a good idea to make sure that each contact person has the sizing information for the particular t-shirt you are ordering.  A good rule of thumb is to always size up if there’s any question about sizing.  A person can easily wear a t-shirt that is a little bit big, but it can be quite uncomfortable if it’s a little bit small.

Set clear deadlines for people to get their sizes to you.  Our standard turn around time would be delivery 10 days from the date you order.  For orders that have a very specific delivery date like a family reunion, we recommend getting that order in at least a few days to a week earlier.  That means you should set your internal deadline for t-shirt sizes for about 3 weeks before your event.  Make sure you send a reminder before the deadline hits.  Once you have all the sizes, you can start compiling your final numbers.

If you saved a design from the online design studio, you can open the design from your account and proceed to place the order online.  Of course, if you prefer to place your order over the phone, we’re always happy to help that way, too!  Keep an eye on the pricing, and make sure you take advantage of our various price breaks.  Ordering a few extra t-shirts, if they fit into the budget can be great for last minute guests or family members who may have missed out on the deadline, and also can be beneficial for anyone that wants a last minute size change.

Consider where you’d like your order delivered.  We offer free UPS ground shipping anywhere in the Contiguous U.S.  If you are placing the order, but the reunion is in another city, we can ship them directly to the closest family member for you.  That way you don’t have to ship them yourself, or travel with them.
